Abstract: The growing demand of the population, coupled with the pollution of watercourses, results in a reduction in the amounts of freshwater available for human consumption, requiring prompt actions to mitigate impacts and slow down degradation. Understanding the responses of rivers to anthropogenic changes is essential for water resource management and requires a holistic perspective. According to the United Nations (UN), if water management is not implemented, 75% of the world's population will experience water scarcity by 2050. In this context, the Rapid River Assessment Protocol (PAR) was developed as a method for evaluating river ecosystems. This protocol is based on visual criteria and allows adaptation to the specific characteristics of the observed landscape. The research aims to contribute scientific knowledge by investigating the various PARs applied by students from elementary school to higher education in Brazil, addressing the cross-cutting nature of environmental education within the academic context, and proposed the adaptation of a PAR that would be accessible to all academic levels in Presidente Prudente. The study was based on three reference protocols, which were adapted and applied by elementary, high school, and university students according to the peculiarities of their respective Brazilian study regions over the past three decades. According to the phenomenological methodology, five observed points were evaluated, resulting in the selection of qualitative parameters for composing the adapted instrument, following reference protocols, including: indicators of erosion; anthropogenic alterations; presence of aquatic plants; odor; color and oiliness of the water; presence of solid waste and domestic sewage; type of bank occupation. According to the phenomenological methodology, five observed points were evaluated, resulting in the selection of (qualitative) parameters for the composition of the adapted instrument, following reference protocols, including indicators of erosion; anthropogenic alterations; presence of aquatic plants; odor; color and oiliness of the water; presence of solid waste and domestic sewage; type of bank occupation; and presence of riparian vegetation. Thus, the adapted PAR is proposed as an accessible and low-cost solution to be used by schools and universities to promote environmental education and student empowerment in integration with the subjects taught by teachers in watercourses near the institutions. The results of the application of the adapted PAR demonstrated that the most impacted section of the Limoeiro Stream is the source (Point 1), which shows severe impacts due to real estate expansion in the region. The environmental condition of the Limoeiro Stream presented a disturbance level in 40% of the total points evaluated, with Point 1 being the most affected, and changes were observed at Points 4 and 5 due to parameters such as color and odor influenced by the discharge of effluents and waste disposal. The result of applying the adapted PAR provides Watershed Committees with a simplified environmental diagnosis, allowing for the direction of actions toward the impacted sections.

Abstract: The application of nanotechnology in the construction sector has enabled the incorporation of new properties into traditional materials in an efficient and innovative manner. Among these features is photocatalysis, which imparts self-cleaning and antimicrobial properties to materials, making them fundamental for reducing pollutants present in liquid effluents and representing an interesting alternative to the emerging environmental crisis—water pollution. In this specific context, the research focuses on developing a photocatalytic mortar using powdered magmatic rock (gray andorinha granite) as a partial substitute for natural sand. This residue acts as a precursor to photocatalytic properties, containing titanium dioxide and iron oxide, which have the potential to facilitate photocatalysis. Test specimens were produced with partial substitutions of natural sand by crushed residue in proportions of 15%, 30%, and 30% combined with the addition of ZnO-NP nanoparticles (0.33%) to intensify photocatalytic activity. A control sample was prepared without the addition of residue or ZnO-NP. The photocatalytic efficiency of the developed mortars was tested by degrading methylene blue in mortar plates immersed in an aqueous solution and exposed to sunlight for four hours. The results showed that samples containing the residue exhibited superior photocatalytic performance compared to the control, demonstrating the efficacy of the residue in dye degradation. The sample RR-30/NP-1 showed one of the best photocatalytic performances, with efficiency surpassing that of the control (81.37%), degrading 88.68% of the methylene blue dye. Additionally, the use of powdered magmatic rock significantly increased the compressive strength of the mortar. After 56 days of curing, the RR-15, RR-30, and RR-30/NP-1 samples exceeded the reference samples, whose strengths were: 76.61 MPa for the control, 88.22 MPa for the RR-15 sample, 80.59 MPa for the RR-30 sample, and 102.15 MPa for the RR-30/NP-1 sample, highlighting their superiority over the control. Therefore, the developed material exhibits characteristics that promote sustainability by providing environmental advantages through its application in effluent treatment and the reuse of industrial residues, reducing the extraction of natural resources. In this way, this work aligns with three objectives outlined in the United Nations' 2030 Agenda: “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure,” “Responsible Consumption and Production,” and “Clean Water and Sanitation.”

Abstract: Baru (Dipteryx alata), a native species of the Brazilian cerrado, has emerged as a significant economic alternative for low-income communities in the northwest region of Minas Gerais. Despite structural and market challenges, the extractivism of baru has adopted sustainable practices that contribute to the preservation of the cerrado's biodiversity while providing an essential source of income for small farmers and local extractivists. This study aims to assess the socioeconomic impact of this activity in low-income municipalities of the northwest mesoregion of Minas Gerais, focusing on its relevance to family farming and regional development. The research provides a detailed analysis of extractivism practices, commercialization, and sustainable management, combining socioeconomic and environmental data obtained through documentary research, interviews, and geospatial analysis. The findings reveal the potential of baru extractivism to boost the local economy sustainably while proposing measures to optimize existing practices, minimize environmental impacts, and expand the benefits for the involved communities. The recommendations aim to strengthen cooperatives, add value to baru-derived products, and expand commercialization networks.

Abstract: This dissertation was developed within the Graduate Program in Environment and Regional Development, under the research line "Environmental Planning and Regional Development." Environmental education is a transdisciplinary field that seeks to promote a critical-dialogical view and understanding of environmental issues, as well as to develop skills and attitudes that lead to responsible and sustainable actions in relation to the environment, which makes Curricular Greening a transformative element for the relationship between human beings and the environment. In this context, the present research aims to verify how the proposal of Curricular Greening is developed in the Medicine course at the Presidente Prudente-SP campus of the University of Western São Paulo (Unoeste), analyzing how environmental issues are incorporated into this course. Thus, the study examines how the environmental question has been incorporated into the Course Pedagogical Project. Furthermore, it analyzes how the Curricular Matrices present environmental concerns by verifying the presence of greening indicators in the Course Syllabi, based on the Network of Curricular Greening of Higher Education. The research has a quantitative nature, beginning with an exploratory review of the literature on Curricular Greening in Medicine courses in Brazil. Subsequently, data was collected through a documentary analysis of the Course Pedagogical Project and the syllabi of the disciplines of the Unoeste Medicine course in Presidente Prudente-SP. The results show that Curricular Greening indicators are present in 75.7% of the courses. Among the disciplines investigated, it is observed that those in the fields of ethics, social interactions, and public health are more integrated with the greening indicators. On the other hand, the technical disciplines, to date, do not meet the same indicators. Thus, it is verified that the technical disciplines of the medicine course present an interesting opportunity for Curricular Greening to be expanded in the investigated course. Regarding the disciplines more closely related to social issues and marked by the indicators, it is noted that the course documents show a concern with greening derived from the analysis of socio-environmental problems and their impact on the analyzed context.
